Grey-haired Geek

Shaking Hands All Around

kellyavatar.jpgBecause someone strongly suggested that I not use my family’s real names on a blog, I have come up with some very clever pseudonyms for us all. Allow me to introduce my husband, myself, and our six children:

“Eldest Son” – Graduated from college and moved far, far away, enhancing his mother’s appreciation of email and text messaging.

“Middle Son” – Teenage Guitar Hero fan, currently sporting a faux hawk. Has permission to dye it green this summer.

“Youngest Son” – Three-year-old bundle of energy possessing an extra chromosome.

“Eldest Daughter” – Teenage drama queen who experiences wild mood swings. Hourly updates available.

“Middle Daughter” – Ten-year-old budding artist/scholar/athlete, still young enough to think hugging Mom is cool.

“Youngest Daughter” – Six-year-old hurricane, probably currently buried beneath an avalanche of toys on her bedroom floor.

“Me” – I’m the grey-haired geek who gave birth to all of the above . . . five after I’d started to turn grey.

“My Husband” – He golfs.

Hilarious! You sound like a good friend — someone who shares the same journey I’m on. Six children, 4 guys, 2 gals, (19 to 10) — never a dull moment, to say the least. I have 2 computer geeks who make me feel so technologically challenged),2 guy guitar heroes (they serenade me in the morning – helps me relax while I’m cooking breakfast for the gang), a gal guitar hero (budding singer too), and mini mozart (gal). They all love to draw (boxes o paper and pictures all over the place). Daddy Bear has the guys in 3D modeling. So we’re a left brained family — all art and musically inclined. Which brings me to my problem, and as a mother of 6 homeschooling for as long as you have, I hope you can give me some advice.

All of my children are behind in school. And when I say behind, I mean, as more children were born and became of school age, I had less time to teach what each needed. So now, I am trying to get them caught up — meaning get away from the concept of get it done so we can get you in your right grade (to do this, they’d probably have to be in school 24/7) to let’s learn this and we don’t have to rush to get it done. No more get caught up. LEt’s just enjoy learning.

My question is what can I do to help them? My husband wants us to focus on Math and Language Arts which is where they really have great problems. He also doesn’t see the need for SS, History & Science at this point. Understand but don’t you need that to get a diploma, just in case they want to go to college in the future? Would love to correspond, please advise.

We pretty much just math and writing and music regularily. My son picks up everything else by osmosis. He is naturally gifted in all aspects of science.
I don’t know what the future will bring??? My son is 13. You are way more experienced than I. But I did want to mention that the artisic types are “right brained” I often make the same mistake and say left also and get corrected so much, so I get to be the corector now…
I enjoy your b log thank you.
